Dear NTI member
As we wind up 2001, it is great to look back and see that nearly all
the
ventures NTI has participated in over the year have been successful.
Thanks should be given to all those Exec Members who served between
2000 - 2001 and to the new members who came on board in June, everyone
contributes and makes the project a pleasure to work on. However,
none of this would be possible if it wasn't for the membership and support
of the 200 practitioners that donate their $20 each year to support
the venture. Thanks for your support and your continued work in
the arts.
We hope that 2002 may bring a venue site to start work on and many
more exciting projects.
Please come and have a drink and a dance on the 8th to celebrate the
year.

Chairman NTI
- August 2002 proposal to City Council to make Garage behind Town
Hall the new theatre site
- Creative Cities grant secures $50,000 towards feasibility study
On the news front. NTI put forward a business case to Auckland
City Council
in August 2002 proposing that the Garage situated at the back of the
Town
Hall, The Pigeons Building and The Rikka Site be made available by Auckland
City Council for the building of a Flexiform Theatre. This report
is
currently being audited by Ernst and Young and we will know their
recommendations at the end of the year.
What was immediately made clear from producing the Business Proposal
was that a very detailed and comprehensive site feasability study needs
to be
completed to identify accurate building and refurbishment costs.
Jazmax who
spent two years working pro bono and assisted in putting together the
original Business Proposal have quoted around $100,000 for this work.
With this information NTI put forward a proposal to Creative Cities
and were
successful in securing $50,000 towards this cost. The NTI executive
would
like to thank Auckland, North Shore, Manuakau, Waitakere and Rodney
Cities
for their support of this project which while situated in Auckland central
will serve practitioners and audiences from the Greater Auckland area.
We expect Auckland City Council will make a decision on their support
of the
Garage project in early 2002 and if their response is positive, work
will
commence on the site report.
- On stage: 3 works from NTI 2001 workshop series
- $7,000 grants awarded for NTI workshop series 2002
- Application for 2002 workshop series closes 20 November
The NTI Development Workshops are in their second year and proposals
are
currently being sought with a deadline of 20 November. Workshops
are
scheduled for early February and April 2002 and it is envisaged that
around
8 projects will be selected. These workshops are an important
part of NTI's
Aims by supporting practitioners and artists to develop new work which
may
hopefully form part of our programme when the theatre is built.
We are proud that three of the nine workshops in the 2001 selection
have
already been presented and NTI would like to congratualte the following
companies for their work:
- Not an IQ Test by Charlotte 90, Frond and Becca Wood at St Agathas
Gallery
- AYPT's "The Love Wrangler" at the Herald Theatre
- Rita Stone's Paper Crane at the Silo
If you require any further information or know anyone who may want to
submit
a project please contact one of the following persons: Justin Lewis,
Raewyn Whyte, or Tracey McGuire.
We would also like to thank North Shore City Council for their grant
of
$5,000 and Creative New Zealand for their grant of $2000 towards the
funding
of the 2002 workshop series.
- Superstar Party Saturday 8 December at the K Road Ballroom
