The international quality auditorium will feature flexible staging and seating for 350-460 people. The site design features an entrance to the theatre through a foyer (with bar / café) off Queen Street, and an auditorium facing onto Greys Avenue and Mayoral Drive, overlooking the proposed Town Hall Arts Precinct site
Q theatre originated from the New Theatre initiative, an industry-led organisation established to secure a new flexible performance venue in the centre of Auckland City. This base of support for the theatre includes leading artists and practitioners, champions, organisations, volunteers and supporters and represents a unique breadth and depth of creative sector interest in the new venue.
Q theatre brings a new way of being a theatre to Auckland. The business case which has won support for this project is based on local and international best practice, uniquely adapted to New Zealand's environment. Independent audits say the plan is is thorough and well-considered.
Over 70% of the building target has been raised, mostly due to significant support from Auckland City and ASB Community Trust. Auckland City is providing the land and buildings on a long-term, peppercorn lease basis -
and has indicated its willingness to provide operating support. In addition nearly $1 million has been found to date to support the organisation required to plan, build, open and operate the new facility from 2009.
Resource Consent has now been granted and we are on a countdown to open in 2010
